Unified source of political relationship intelligence inside the product
Punchbowl News is a premium news organization covering power, people, and politics in Washington, D.C. Founded by three former Politico Playbook journalists, it sells access to the relationships and decisions that shape federal policy. Its audience is lobbyists, investors, policy professionals, congressional staff, and other journalists. Premium subscriptions run up to $1,200 a year, and subscription revenue grew 60% in the first half of 2025.
01 The ChallengeFederal lobbying spending hit $5.3 billion in 2025. 15,768 organizations filed activity that year, up from 14,061 in 2024. Roughly one in four federal lobbyists now works on AI policy. Trade-related filings rose 42% year over year. That matters for Punchbowl because the signals their audience tracks span many sources: campaign finance records, lobbying disclosures, congressional activity, employment histories, policy tracking systems. Each has its own format. Each updates on its own cadence.
For a newsroom whose subscribers pay for insider intelligence, the math is brutal. Turning these signals into a story lead meant hours of manual cross-referencing. Reporters did the work by hand: FEC records, committee assignments, donor relationships, employment histories. Coverage was capped by the queue.
Competing intelligence platforms like FiscalNote, Quorum, and Bloomberg Government have been pouring AI into legislative tracking and stakeholder mapping. Punchbowl saw an opening to differentiate on relationship intelligence: the connections between people, money, and policy. The platform had to live inside its own product ecosystem.
02 The ApproachProvectus partnered with Punchbowl News to design and build The Sphere, a political relationship intelligence platform that runs inside the existing product. The engagement opened with the data foundation. Pipelines pull in public sources at the cadence each updates, then bring them into a shared analytical pool.
The order mattered. Relationship detection only works when records resolve cleanly across datasets. The same lobbyist and the same PAC must match across every feed. Thus, the data foundation had to be robust enough – and work right – before AI & analytics could be built on top.
The AI layer followed. Relationship detection and contextual ranking models surface the connections most likely to matter to a working reporter. The integration with Punchbowl’s product was a hard requirement throughout. Every component had to land inside the experience subscribers already pay for.
03 The BuildThe data foundation runs on a cloud-native architecture. Automated pipelines ingest campaign finance records, lobbying disclosures, congressional activity, employment histories, and related public data sources. Entity resolution and normalization consolidate fragmented records into a unified analytical layer for political relationship intelligence. The result is one UI where people, organizations, committees, and legislative activity can be queried against each other.
On top of that foundation, AI models detect and analyze connections between people, organizations, and policy activity. Detailed story leads emerge from the same layer. A contextual ranking layer prioritizes the connections most likely to be newsworthy. Reporters open a short, ranked list instead of a search result page.
The whole platform integrates 100% into Punchbowl’s existing product ecosystem. The intelligence layer ships as a capability inside the subscriber experience.
04 The ResultsThe Sphere systematically detects relationships across consolidated datasets and surfaces ranked candidates with the underlying evidence attached.

Reduction in manual research effort across the Punchbowl newsroom
Reporters no longer have to stitch lead connections together by hand. Time that used to go into list aggregation and scanning now goes into high-value activities: investigation, context, and reporting. Coverage now scales with editorial judgment instead of queue depth.
The newsroom can pursue patterns of influence at a depth that fragmented public data made impractical before. The work is grounded in verified relationship records that subscribers can trust. Punchbowl’s product ecosystems now boasts a unified political intelligence foundation – a game-changer in Media & Journalism.
05 What’s NextThe Sphere is the foundation for the next wave of subscriber-facing capabilities. AI- and GenAI-powered search, alerts, and report visualization will be built on top of the same platform. Punchbowl owns the data, the models, and the product. Provectus continues to partner on the extension path.
